Dorothy May Roberts

Dorothy May (Davie) Roberts of Ossipee, NH, died June 9, 2018. Born in Pawtucket, RI, in 1922, she graduated from Pawtucket High School in 1940. In August of 1941 she married Elmore B. ("Bud") Roberts of Providence, RI. Their only child, Bethany Ann, was born in October, 1942. Dot and her family moved to Pawcatuck, CT following his service in the Coast Guard during WWII. He became the pastor of the Pawcatuck Congregational Church. Upon his graduation from Brown University, the family moved to Clinton, CT, where Bud was pastor of the Congregational Church as he studied at Yale. Dot began college at Southern Connecticut State, graduating in 1956. She began her teaching career in Clinton. In 1960, Bud and Dot moved to Mystic, where Bud and Dot taught at Carl C. Cutler Middle School. Dot furthered her studies by getting her master's degree in Reading at U Conn. For twenty-one years Dot taught remedial reading and Language Arts to gifted students in grades 7 through 9. Over 75 of her students received writing awards in the Scholastic Writing Contest sponsored yearly by the Hartford Courant. For 15 years, she also edited and published the Cutler school magazine, The Quill and Scroll. Following their retirement from Cutler, Dot and Bud were both elected to the prestigious Groton Teachers Hall of Fame. They retired in 1982 to their New Hampshire home on Lovell Lake in Sanbornville, where they resided for 23 years, finally moving to Wolfeboro in 2003. Dot was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Bud, in 2005, and her dear daughter Beth Morry in 2007. She is survived by her son-in-law, Richard Morry, of Stuart, FL, her granddaughter Kristen (and husband Mark) Pennell of Springfield, VT, and three great-grandchildren: Eliza Pennell of Taipei, Taiwan, Ben Pennell of North Springfield, VT, and Luke Pennell of Springfield, VT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the annual school essay awards at Carl C. Cutler Middle School, Fishtown Rd., Mystic, CT 06340.
