Ruth E. S. Pheeney Following a long and very full life dedicated to family and friends, Ruth Elizabeth Spaulding "Gigi" Pheeney of Wolfeboro, NH passed peacefully away at The Mountain View Community in Ossipee, NH on October 5, 2014. Born in Rockland, Maine on August 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Walter and C. Winifred Spaulding. After living many years in Belmont, MA, Ruth moved to Wolfeboro almost 50 years ago and was always proud to call it home. Family was paramount in Gigi's life, especially her loving children, Walter Pheeney of Farmington Hills, MI and Joy Messineo of Wolfeboro. Gigi is also fondly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Phyllis, and her son-in-law, Stephen, as well as by her beloved grandchildren, Mark Pheeney and his wife Lynn, and Paige Lock and her husband Eric. Great grandchildren Alexis, Owen and Hannah Pheeney have also been blessed by Gigi's presence in their young lives and have felt her unwavering love and devotion. Those who called Gigi their friend will always appreciate her energy and enthusiasm for life and her amazing abilities to reach out and help others. Whether it be a birthday call, a basket of fresh-picked raspberries, and invitation to dinner, lunch on her deck overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee, or any number of other extensions of her hand in friendship, Gigi's kind and giving nature, her true love of people, her wit and wisdom, and her selfless giving etch her memory forever in the lives of those she touched and who are richer for having known her. Few were as devoted to the community of Wolfeboro as Ruth. Longtime owner of Black's Paper Store and Gift Shop and one of the founding Directors of Community Bank and Trust Company, Gigi was honored by the Wolfeboro Lions Club as their Citizen of the Year in 1994. Her charitable works were many, including Co-Chair of the American Cancer Society of Wolfeboro, a valued member of the Garden Club, an active member of the First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro, a volunteer friend of the Lakes Region Humane Society, a supporter of the VNA-Hospice of Southern Carroll County and Co-Chair and longtime supporter of the Huggins Hospital Street Fair. Her legacy is her simple gift of kindness, a way of being sensitive to others, thoughtful and concerned. Easy to know, Gigi spent endless hours offering to help in any way she could. She was someone others could count on, and surely her generosity of heart filled the lives of many with a joy beyond measure. A service of remembrance and memorial celebration of her life will be held at The First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro on Saturday, November 8th at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Wolfeboro Building Fund, 115 S. Main Street, Wolfeboro, or a charity of one's choice.
