Wesley W. Maynard

Wesley W. Maynard, 87, of Freedom, NH and The Sea Ranch, CA died at home on January 1, 2015. He was born in Somerville, MA, the son of the late Wesley A Maynard and Averil Chalmers Maynard. He could trace his lineage back to Miles Standish of the Plymouth Colony. Wesley is survived by his wife, Catherine, his daughter Deborah Plumer and his son-in-law Bruce Plumer of The Sea Ranch, CA, his son Joseph and his daughter-in-law Victoria Maynard of Ridgely, MD and by his three grandchildren, Nathaniel Maynard of Denton, MD, Justin Maynard of Ridgely, MD, and his granddaughter Alicia Maynard Klages and her husband Bryan Klages of Ridgely, MD. Wes attended Somerville, MA schools and, in 1944, enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Macon, Huntington, Dayton, Tutuila, Donner, and his last sea duty was on the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, now a naval museum in New York. His shore duty was served with the Atlantic Fleet Camera Party and the Naval Supply School in Newport, RI. He retired from the Navy in 1964. While stationed in Norfolk, VA, he attended the College of William and Mary. He graduated from Bryant College and received his Master’s degree from Providence College. Wes taught business courses and ran the schools computer systems at Bristol High School, Bristol, RI, for more than twenty years, retiring again in 1990. While at Bristol, he served as the school’s Ski Club Advisor and was co-Advisor for the Bristol High School Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. He was inducted as a member in this Chapter in 1978. He was president of the Town Howlers Square Dance Club in Portsmouth, RI. He also served as Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 50, Portsmouth, under the guidance of his good friend, the late Robert Silva. He went on to serve as Scoutmaster for many years after Bob was transferred. He enjoyed the theater and was a season subscriber to Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI. Wes was also a First Aid Instructor, with his daughter Deborah and the late Warren Anthony. He was a member of the Scrub Oak Scramblers Snowmobile Club and served with the late Fred Jones, a good friend, as a Snowmobile Safety Instructor. He served as treasurer of the Wolfeboro Seniors Club for five years. He has also been a member of the Freedom Community Club and the South Eaton White Meetinghouse Association in Eaton, NH. He was also a licensed member of the ARRL Amateur Radio Club. He had also been a member of the National Education Association and NEA of Rhode Island. Per his request, there will be no wake or funeral. He will be buried with Military Honors in Arlington National Cemetery. The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
