Marie Leone Cole

April 21, 1925 — December 23, 2015

Wolfeboro, NH----Marie Leone (Burke) Cole, 90, formerly of 6 Cumberland Rd, died December 23, 2015 at Wolfeboro Bay Center. Born April 21, 1925 in Amesbury, MA, the oldest daughter of the late James and Margaret (Armitage) Burke, she has lived in Wolfeboro since 2002, previously living in Amesbury. Marie attended St. Joseph’s School and Amesbury High School, from where she graduated in 1943. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church until moving to Wolfeboro, at which time she joined St. Cecilia’s Church, later St. Katharine Drexel. After high school graduation Marie worked as a clerk for several years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She then worked in the office of the Bixby Company in Haverhill, MA, and it was during this time when she met her future husband in the diner across the street. She and William (Bill) married in 1951 and enjoyed nearly 63 years together. Marie spent many years as a homemaker, raising their three children, and eventually returned to part-time employment. She loved her position as a library aide at both Amesbury Elementary Schools, from where she retired in June 1990. By this time, Marie and Bill had traded in their tent-trailer for an RV and spent vacations traveling through the Northeast, Florida and Canada. Marie was an avid knitter and seamstress, always having a variety of projects in different stages of completion for her children and grandchildren. Marie also enjoyed camping in state parks, beginning in 1957 with their very heavy canvas tent and ‘hole in the ground’ cooler. A highlight was their month-long camping trip across country with the family in 1972. Pre-deceased by her husband William Holland Cole in 2014, her day old son Richard William Cole in 1957, John Peter Cole in 2015 and her sister Margaret Herne on December 14, 2015. Survivors include her son Robert William Cole of St. Albans, VT and her daughter Kathleen C. Roseen and her husband Eric of Tuftonboro, NH. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three nephews, and one niece. Marie received great pleasure from her family, and especially from her grandchildren and great-children. She will be missed by all. The family is deeply grateful to all staff of Wolfeboro Bay’s Homestead unit for the wonderful care that Marie received during her eight-month tenure there. Calling hours are 6-8 PM Tuesday, December 29 at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 85 Mill St, Wolfeboro, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM Wednesday, December 30 at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 40 Hidden Springs Rd, Route 28, Alton, NH. Burial will be at 1 PM in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Amesbury, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to St. Katharine Drexel Church, PO Box 180, Wolfeboro, NH 03894 or to the Lakes Region Humane Society, PO Box 655, Ossipee, NH 03864.
