Alice P. Douglas

Tuftonboro, NH- Alice Lawrence Douglas passed away in her beloved Lower Beech Pond home surrounded by family and friends on 5/28/2011. She was 72 years old and had courageously fought leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, for the past five years. Alice was born in Boston, and lived in Melrose, Mass. Since 1946, Alice, her sister, brother and their parents spent every summer at Lower Beech Pond, Tuftonboro. It was there that the three children and especially Alice developed a love of nature and the outdoors. Alice and her siblings learned to swim and boat, catch and clean fish, identify birds, hike , pick berries ,cook , and practice all types of natural activities which later developed into lifelong skills and achievements. Alice attended Plymouth State, graduated from Lyndon State College and received her Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Vermont. She began her vocation at the newly opened Kingswood Regional High School as a library assistant, later working at the Concord Graded School in Concord, Vermont and lastly completing her career at Morse High School in Bath, Maine. Upon retiring as a librarian in Maine, Alice and her late husband, Bill Kaiser, built their dream home on the shore of Lower Beech Pond near the site of Alice's summer cottage. In addition to enjoying their retirement home, Alice and her husband remained avid campers, hikers, bicyclists, kayakers, white water rafters and as such traveled all over the United States and out of the country in all seasons to pursue their love of the outdoors and for the opportunity to meet a challenge. Never one to give up, Alice met a personal goal this past July , along with friends from the Penobscot Paddling & Chowder Society, of kayaking the thirty miles she needed to complete paddling the entire Kennebec River. In addition to outdoor sports, Alice was an accomplished wood carver, a quilter and an excellent cook. Her family and friends always looked forward to her culinary expertise. Alice was a dedicated and devoted ten year member of the Ladies of the Lake Quilting Guild... Always a friend too many Alice was generous with her time and materials. Alice Patricia Douglas was predeceased by a sister Priscilla Heald, a son Vance E. Douglas, a daughter Karen J. Douglas, a grand niece Riley Jane Lawrence and her husband Wolfgang " Bill" Kaiser. She is survived by a brother Donald H. Lawrence of KY, a niece Deborah Heald Guidebeck and her family of MA, four nephews: Bruce Heald and family of Wolfeboro, Robert Heald and Kim Goyette of Wolfeboro, David Lawrence and family of KY and Eric Lawrence and family, also from KY. Alice leaves three step children: Richard Kaiser and family of Spencer, MA., Kathy Johnson and family of Merrimack , NH, and Karl Kaiser of Rumney , NH and a sister in law, Ursula Foster and family of WA. Ms. Douglas will also be greatly missed by four grand nieces, three grand nephews, eight step great grand children and many dear friends from near and far. Memorial Services will be held Sunday July 10, 2011 @ 10:30 at the Baker-GagneFuneral Home 85 Mill Street, Wolfeboro, NH In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Central NH VNA & Hospice, 240 S.
