August Armstrong

September 2, 1949 — July 2, 2022

August Armstrong, 72, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away on Saturday July 2nd, 2022 with her husband by her side. She is survived by her husband, Dean Kent; her children Autumn Armstrong-Berg, Willow Baer and Amber Baer; and her Step-Children Bethany Kent-Hawkins, Mathew Kent, and Jeremy Kent; as well as her 13 grandchildren. A dynamic woman, August had too much personality to fit into just one role. She held degrees in Theater Arts from SUNY New Paltz and in Filmography from Bard College, and she also attended the Edgar Cayce Institute in Virginia Beach. She was a director, an actor, a playwright, a documentarian, a teacher, a counselor, a gardener, a healer and a wanderer. She was dedicated to learning and exploring, and could routinely be found hiking the woods of New Hampshire with nothing but a walking stick and a dog by her side. August was a trailblazer, a single mother bringing her toddler with her to college classes without a care for what others might think. With her trademark boldness, she talked her way into auditing most of the film classes she went to in Bard before she was even officially a student. It would never have occurred to her to ask permission first, she simply strode forward for what she wanted, in all facets of life. At her core, August was a teacher and spiritual mentor. She taught classes to those looking for a deeper connection to themselves and an understanding of the spiritual world around us all. Her students looked to heal themselves and the world around them, and August gave them a small key to that mystery. August had an infectious sense of humor, finding no shame in the silly. She loved children and could charm even the most uncertain and timid of them because she understood what it was like to look at a big scary world and feel too small. August wanted to see every part of the world, traveling and exploring. She forever sought to change and grow into the next aspect of herself. If you were lucky enough to be a part of her life, you were taught to live, get hurt, get back up and live again with as much love as you can. She taught her kids and grandkids to reach for the absolute stars. She lived true to herself to the very end. We love you, Miss August. See you in the mountains! August will be laid to rest in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, with a private burial on July 17th. A celebration of her life will be held at the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk, Virginia, on July 31st at 1pm in the Holly Room. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to support all the things she loved so much about Waterville Valley that she chose to remain a part of them forever. The Waterville Valley non-profit foundation can be located at: www.watervillevalleyfoundation.org
