Barbara Ann Lemery

May 30, 1933 — July 20, 2022

Barbara Ann Lemery (Mouse), a long time Wolfeboro resident, died on Wednesday July 20th, 2022. She died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Barbara was born on May 30th, 1933, at the farm where she grew up in Alton NH to Augustus and Mabel (Clough) Glidden. Barbara was the oldest of five children. Her siblings were Norma Bickford, Richard Glidden, Nancy MacKay, and Jerry Glidden. She went to school in Alton. She met her future husband, George Lemery, while working at The Blue Jay. They were married in 1955 and soon after moved to Wolfeboro and raised three children: Wayne, Doug, and Rachel. Like her husband George who owned Weston Auto Body, Barbara was a true entrepreneur. She and her sister Norma opened the first consignment store in Wolfeboro, the Second Chance Closet, which they ran for years. After she and Norma sold the store, Barbara went on to open a quilting supply store, the Calico Patch. Through the years she instructed hundreds of fellow quilting enthusiasts the tips and tricks of the art. It was something she loved to do; teaching and sharing her expertise with others. She spoke of it often. Barbara was also a Girl Scout Leader with her friend Jane Walsh of Wolfeboro. The two of them taught self-sufficiency, creativity, and kindness to countless Girl Scouts. Barbara also worked for years at the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen here in Wolfeboro, finally retiring in her 80’s. She appreciated all the artists and their works and so loved the people she worked with. Mouse was a gracious host. Be it a holiday, a birthday party or just Sunday dinner, she always made sure her guests, both new and old were comfortable and felt welcome. There was always a favorite pie or cookie, a particular dish cooked just your way or just the right present for the occasion. And if you were there when she told one of her tales, you always ended up laughing until it hurt. She was just that way. Her spaghetti sauce is legendary. Her fried scallops were divine. And her breakfast was always unforgettable. The arrival of her annual Christmas cookie care package would cause delight and a small feeding frenzy in every home. Oh, and, she loved to eat a good rib-eye with a glass of wine. She had a green thumb that made all of us jealous. She could just touch a plant or say something nice to it and the next thing you know it was as healthy as it could be. In later years, Mouse spent the winter months in Florida with family. Another adventure was in the works, and she was going to be right in the middle of it. Be it roller coasters or river rafting, Mouse was there. Mouse especially loved her grandchildren, Neil, and Rose. Whether she was cooking breakfast, telling stories, or just listening, she valued her time with both of them. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Augustus and Mabel Glidden, husband George Lemery, her son Wayne Lemery, her sister Norma Bickford and her nephew, David MacKay. She is survived by her brothers, Richard Glidden and his wife Germaine, Gerald Glidden and his wife Paula, sister Nancy MacKay and husband John, son Doug Lemery and his wife Lori, daughter Rachel Cohee and her husband Pete, her two grandchildren Neil and Rose and two great grandchildren, Mason, and Oliver.
