Doris May (Johnson) Nyquist, of Wolfeboro, NH., formerly of Melrose, Massachusetts died peacefully on September 4, 2021 with the love and admiration of her family, friends and all who encountered her during her long and wonderful life. She was 99. Doris was born in Norwood, Massachusetts on August 28, 1922, the daughter of Joel M. Johnson, Sr and Florence (Swanson) Johnson. Joel had emigrated from Sweden to the United States in 1912 and Florence’s parents were also Swedish immigrants. Hence, Doris’ lifelong love of all things Swedish. Doris grew up in North Easton, Massachusetts and graduated from Oliver Ames High School in 1940. She received a Diploma in Voice from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1943 and a B.S. and M.Ed. from Boston University in 1969 and 1974 respectively. She was a public school music supervisor and teacher in her first career in the 1940s and 1950s in Rochester, N.H. and Boxford, Georgetown, Groveland, Middleton and Topsfield, Massachusetts. She returned to elementary teaching at the Winthrop School in Melrose in the late Sixties, concluding her professional career in 1987 as the school’s principal. She became a resident of Wolfeboro after her retirement that year. After meeting him at Swedish American dances at places such as Moseley on the Charles, she married the late Clifford Nyquist in 1948. He predeceased her in 1978. Doris was smart as a whip with a quiet yet unyielding ambition. She was most known, however, for her patience, kindness, graciousness and accommodating nature. Your world was always a better place when she was in it. She could play any music placed in front of her on a piano. She loved to sing and people loved to hear her sing. Doris is survived by her son, Lee Nyquist (Leslie Nixon) of New Boston, N.H., her daughter Kim Heath (Peter) of Niceville, Florida and Wolfeboro, and her grandchildren, Christina Nyquist, of Washington, D.C., Carla Nyquist, of Denver, Colorado, Lincoln Nyquist and Linnea Nyquist, of New Boston, Dr. Zachary Heath, of San Antonio, Texas and Jeffrey Heath of North Liberty, Iowa. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Joel Johnson, Jr., her husband, Clifford V. Nyquist and her beloved grandson, Clifford R. Nyquist. There are no calling hours.
