Eugene Murphy

Wolfeboro N.H. - Eugene Chandler Murphy, a longtime Wolfeboro resident passed away peacefully on December 7, 2015 at Wolfeboro Bay Center. He was 86. Gene was born in Stamford, CT on May 9, 1929, the son of the late Dennis and Carolyn (Fessenden) Murphy. Pre-Deceased by his wife Betty Jean (Wyman) Murphy in 1994 he is survived by his daughters Kim Tarnapoll of New Albany, OH, Kathy Johnson of Aspen, CO, and Kristen Sonntag of Newport Beach, CA; sons Kevin Murphy of Greenwich, CT and Keith Murphy of San Clemente, CA; brothers Dennis J. Murphy of Palm City, FL and John F. Murphy of Jensen Beach, FL; 12 grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews who affectionately knew him as Grumpy, as he wished. Betty and Gene raised their family in Wyckoff, NJ and Acton, MA. Gene was proud of his country and the timing of his passing on Pearl Harbor Day highlights his service as Sergeant in the United States Army while stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He went on to graduate from Lehigh University in 1956. He had an injury shortened football career as a punter and linebacker for the Engineers and was an enthusiastic brother at Beta Theta Pi. Gene, one of two members of his class to be offered employment with IBM, spent the majority of his career in the computer mainframe business with Service Bureau Corporation- an IBM subsidiary, Cambex- a Boston based manufacturer and reseller of computer memory related products, and Comdisco, Inc.- a Chicago based sales and leasing company. During his retirement years he cherished his role as Ranger at the Kingswood Golf Club. His main purpose was to speed up play but many members had the sense that his natural ability of making you feel at home as well as the sharing of a joke or two may have actually resulted in the opposite. In his earlier years he took great pride in youth coaching, attending his children's sporting and artistic events, and shooting off his cannon at Acton Boxboro football games. In the broadcast booth he filled the airwaves with facts and figures, names and numbers, and was sure to exploit every gap in action with color commentary. He enjoyed his history books, poker nights, golf and boating, and peaceful time at the lake. His love for sharing jokes was endless. Gene requested that a simple message be shared- Hakuna Matata A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. in Wolfeboro, NH.
