Lawrence Richard Maddock

January 15, 1922 — February 14, 2018

Wolfeboro, NH - Larry Maddock, patriarch of a large and loving family, passed away surrounded by family on February 14, 2018 Larry was born in Greens Farms, Westport, CT January 15, 1922. Son of the late Lawrence Alfred and Irene (Crossman) Maddock. He was raised with his younger brother Ray. He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Frances Louise (Nevins) Maddock of Wolfeboro, 4 children, Judith Loraine Anderson of Bristol, RI, Rebecca Ann Racine and husband Raymond of Epping, NH, Sandra Louise Haskett of Bethel, CT, and Jonathan Lawrence Maddock and wife Karen of Wolfeboro, NH, and 6 grandchildren, Darren Racine, Danielle Racine Tworek, Bryan Racine, Morgan Haskett, Thea Haskett Verner, and Kelsey Maddock, and 9 great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his brother Raymond Robert Maddock. Larry graduated from Staples High School in Westport, class of 1939. He was an athlete; ran track, member of both the basketball and baseball teams, and the Captain of the football team. He attended Springfield college briefly before entering the armed services. In 1943 he married Fran, his high school sweetheart. A veteran of WWII, he enlisted in the then Army Air Corps (Air Force) in 1942 and became a navigator. He flew 30 bombing missions over Europe in a B-24 Bomber, including a tactical mission on D-Day. He received many awards including the Three Clusters to Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Back in Westport after the war, he designed a home and built it himself after work and on weekends. As owner of Maddock Brothers, he ran the business and worked with great artistry as a brick, block & stone mason. He took pride in keeping his family safe and healthy, and encouraged minds to grow. He was a voracious reader of novels, and was well known at the town libraries wherever he lived. He was an accomplished woodworker, designing and crafting furniture which now graces the homes of many family members. After retiring Larry & Fran moved to West Kingston, RI and in 2005 settled in Wolfeboro, NH. A warm and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend; our hero in so many ways. Larry will be remembered for being so special, approaching life with his great sense of humor, his smile, kindness and his ease at making others feel at home. No services are planned at this time. The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is assisting the family with the arrangements.
