Lois graduated from Chandler School for Women in 1949, working in several Boston businesses before marrying Alton (Al) Vater in 1952. Following her father’s untimely death in the late 1940s, Lois helped her brother carry on their father’s ice, coal and stove oil delivery business which eventually grew into Hughes Oil Company. Lois and Al moved to Framingham, MA in 1954, living there for 35 years while raising their two daughters, Susan and Carol. During that time Lois was active in the church school and choir of the First United Methodist Church.

In the late 1950s, Lois and Al began vacationing with Loisbrother and sister-in-law in Wolfeboro, NH. The two couples later built a home together in the Port Wedeln Association on Lake Winnipesaukee. Throughout the years, Lois and Al enjoyed countless happy times at the Lake with their family and expanding circle of friends, eventually retiring to Wolfeboro.

After Al’s death in 2002, Lois moved to Sugar Hill Retirement Community, and continued to participate in Wolfeboro life, volunteering for 25 years at the annual Hospital Fair and The Chamber of Commerce, and as an active member of the First Congregational Church. In her later years, she moved to Hanover, NH to be near her daughter, Susan.

Lois was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alton Vater. Lois was the loving mother of Susan Shadford (Stephen) and Carol Merchant (Michael), beloved Nana to Julie Odato, Kerry Friel, Kristin Mustonen, and Jill McKenna.
