Mary Anne Hartnett Sosnoff, 76, of Silver Lake, NH died on April 1, 2024 in Tacoma, WA, attended by her family.
Mary Anne was born on December 28, 1947 in Boston to Charles Frederick Hartnett and Helen Gillespie Hartnett. She grew up in Dover, NH, with three brothers, Rick, John and Anthony. She spent four summers at Waukeela Camp in Eaton Center, NH. Mary Anne attended the Walnut Hill School in Natick, MA, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College for Women at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, in 1969. At Penn Mary Anne made lifelong friends, and met the love of her life, Hershel David Sosnoff.
After graduation and a brief stint at Filene’s, Mary Anne was drawn to a career in education. It was during her first years as a teacher that Mary Anne reunited with Hersh after eight years apart, and the two rekindled their relationship. In 1974 they celebrated their marriage at Meadow House, Mary Anne's beloved childhood home, with many friends and family in attendance, as well as cows from the property next door (to the shock and delight of the Sosnoff family from New York City).
In 1978, Mary Anne and Hersh welcomed their daughter Katherine Lee Sosnoff, and in 1982, their son Hadley Hartnett Sosnoff. Mary Anne was a devoted mother, and the joy of her life was caring for her family. As her children grew, she watched Katie enjoy a love of the outdoors and hiking, while Hadley loved playing hockey, and she was always happy to nurture their passions. Ever the road warrior, there was no trail or tournament too far away.
Hersh and Mary Anne lived in New York City, Denver and Maryland, before settling in Chappaqua, NY to raise their family. In 2006, Mary Anne and Hersh retired to Silver Lake, where they built their dream home and enjoyed numerous happy years at the lake. Mary Anne was an engaged community member and made many close friends. She enjoyed communing with her cat, kayaking on the lake, walking with friends, and the occasional waterskiing set.
After two bouts of cancer in her fifties, Mary Anne fought bravely to survive and to "see what happened" in her children's lives. We are so grateful that she did get the chance to see what happened, and lived nearly twenty-five years past her original cancer diagnosis. Mary Anne is survived by her daughter, Katie Sosnoff (Annie Cain) and her grandchildren Hazel and Landry; her son, Hadley Sosnoff (Kate) and grandchildren Townsend and Wells; her brothers Charles F. Hartnett, Jr. and Anthony S. Hartnett.
We will forever miss Mary Anne's spirit, positivity, kindness and love. Burial services will be private. The family asks that anyone who would like to remember Mary Anne contribute to the Silver Lake Association of Madison, an organization that works to preserve the lake that Mary Anne so adored.
