William H. Cole

Wolfeboro, NH----William Holland Cole, 92, of 6 Cumberland Rd, died May 21, 2014 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro. Born June 19, 1921 in Groveton, NH, the oldest child of the late Harlie A. and Lucy E. (Alden) Cole, he has lived in Wolfeboro since 2002, previously living in Amesbury, MA. "Holland" graduated from Groveton High School in 1939 and worked for the Groveton Paper Co. for the next 2 ½ years. He then entered the Army Corp of Engineers in March, 1943 and earned the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge Dec. 1, 1945. For 22 months he was a construction foreman in charge of twelve men, repairing and building bridges and other structures throughout Europe. Bill worked for many years as a tool designer machinist for The Bailey Company in Amesbury, MA, and later in Seabrook, NH. He retired July 1, 1983. Following his retirement, he learned the upholstery trade and spent the next fifteen or so years working the trade for family and friends. In addition to this hobby, Bill loved railroads and spent many hours working on his basement model train set. He also enjoyed tramping through the woods, fishing, and camping vacations with his family, especially the month-long trip across country in 1972. Bill's latest hobby was learning to cook and bake (pies, cake and bread) at the age of 90. He was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Natalie (Cole) Auger, his brother Kenneth Cole, and his day-old son Richard William, in 1957. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marie (Burke) Cole of Wolfeboro; two sons, John Peter Cole, and Robert William Cole of St. Albans, VT; his daughter Kathleen C. Roseen and her husband Eric, of Tuftonboro NH; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law Margaret Herne of Cranston, RI; three nephews, one niece and many cousins. Bill received great pleasure from his family, and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all. Calling hours will be 6-8 PM Monday, June 9 at the Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 85 Mill St., Wolfeboro, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Tuesday, June 10 at St. Katharine Drexel Church, Route 28, Alton, NH. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Amesbury, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Katharine Drexel Church, PO Box 180, Wolfeboro, NH 03894, or to the Lakes Region Humane Society, 11 Old Route 28, Ossipee, NH 03864.
