William F. Dougherty, 79, of Avery Heights, Hartford formerly of West Hartford, CT died Nov. 1 in Hartford. He spent some time writing poetry in Wolfeboro. Born in Hartford, CT October 18, 1938, he was the beloved son of John F. and Anna C. (Burns) Dougherty. He was a graduate of Wethersfield High School, and additionally received his B.A. in English from Charter Oak College, his M.A. in English from Central Connecticut State University and his Ph.D. in English from University of Connecticut. Bill's career in journalism began in the early 60's as he served as chief editorial writer for many newspapers including the New Bedford Standard Times, the Boston Herald-Traveler, the Hartford Times,the Nashua Telegraph, and The Waterbury Republican-America. He also was an editorial page editor and columnist for the Charlottesville Daily Progress. He served as adjunct professor at many local colleges, a speech writer, secondary and college level tutor and book reviewer. His poetry was published in many periodicals and he was the author of two poetry books: Owl Light and Poems:New & Used. He was particularly proud of his political appointment to the executive research and writing staff in Washington D.C. in the mid 70"s. His volunteer work included service to the Epilepsy Society of Massachusetts. He was a member of the Mensa Society. He was an avid fan of the UCONN Women's Basketball team. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia A. Lyons, his son James C. Dougherty, his daughter, Justine A. Dougherty and 3 grandchildren. He is also survived by his oldest friend and caregiver Merrilyn Foxall Garcia and her family. The family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of Hartford Hospital, the visiting nurses of Hartford Healthcare At Home, and the caring staff, nurses and medical professionals of Avery Heights for their compassionate care. They are living proof that angels do walk among us. A graveside service was held 11:00 AM, Monday Nov. 6 at Lakeview Cemetery in Wolfeboro.
