Zell Kellogg

September 2, 1925 — January 3, 2024

Zell R. Kellogg, age 98, died peacefully on January 3, 2024, at Mountain View Community in Ossipee, NH.   She was born Sabrie Zell Rogers on September 2, 1925, in Ridgeville, SC, the last of seven children of Louis Manning Rogers and Sabrie Cornelia Rudd.  Zell was raised by her aunt Karine and her husband Clifford Sessions, in Winter Garden, FL, after Zell's parents and sister Valda were killed in an automobile accident in June 1926 in Charleston, SC. During her teenage years, Zell wrote for the community newspaper in Winter Garden and graduated as valedictorian from Lakeview High School in 1943.  She earned a bachelor's degree from Rollins College in 1946 and later a master's in library science from the University of Pittsburgh.   Throughout her long life, Zell enjoyed reading for both enjoyment and enlightenment, and passed on her love of learning to her family. Zell met her future husband, Henry Birge (Hank) Kellogg, at a Rollins dance when he was deployed for training in Florida prior to serving in the Pacific theater in World War II.   They were steadfast pen pals during Hank's deployments to Hawaii, Saipan, Tinian, Guam and Okinawa with the Army Air Corps and married on August 14, 1946, in Blowing Rock, NC. In their early years together, Zell initially settled near Hank's family in Connecticut, where their first child, Sarah, was born in June 1947.  They later moved to Media, PA; Mission, KS; Duffield, England; and Monroeville, PA, where Zell enjoyed hosting foreign exchange students who lived with the family for periods ranging from a few months to a full school year.  In addition to their daughter, Hank and Zell had three sons, Timothy born in 1950 and currently a resident of Wolfeboro, NH; Mark born in 1955 and currently a resident of Manhattan, NY; and David born in 1958 and currently a resident of Arlington, VA. After raising their family in Monroeville, Zell moved with Hank to Marblehead,MA, and later bought a second home in Mount Dora, FL, where she spent many pleasant winters and was active at St. Edward's Episcopal Church.  During her years in Monroeville and Marblehead, Zell worked at a Montessori school, a local library and various bookstores.  She later moved with Hank to Chatham, MA and eventually to Wolfeboro, NH. Zell is survived by her three sons, eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her daughter, who died in March 2008, and her husband, who died in April 2017. A memorial service is planned for April 6, 2024, in Newington, CT followed by interment in the Kellogg family plot in Newington Center Cemetery. Baker-Gagne Funeral Homes of Wolfeboro and West Ossipee are assisting the family with the arrangements.  To view an online memorial, leave a message of condolences or for more information go to: www.baker-gagnefuneralhomes.com .
